ARTIST STATEMENT:

Lori Horowitz explores the unfolding of humanity within the natural world, using sculpture to reveal facades, confront social and emotional complexities, and speak to the need for belonging in an increasingly divided society. Materiality is signature to practice: wire mesh, papier mâché, encaustic wax, torched copper, brass mesh, photography, and paint are pushed to their expressive limits through cutting, torching, fuming, and shaping, allowing the artist to collapse and expand the boundaries between two- and three-dimensional space. Drawing from relief-sculpture traditions, she creates copper wire–mesh figures whose transparent, precarious forms—patinated through fuming to rich organic tones—cast haunting shadows that echo the fragility of contemporary life. Horowitz’s series Exodus and Rooted in Humanity, is inspired by photographs of anthropomorphic roots and unusual plant life, coax human figures from nature, integrating symbolic elements like carnivorous plants and fungi to suggest hidden dangers beneath social surfaces. By merging nature’s serenity with the tensions of modern conflict, the work reflects recurring struggles throughout history, reconnecting us to one another, to the environment, and to the shared responsibility of nurturing harmony between humanity and nature.
