ARTIST STATEMENT:

My artwork is a reflection of my experiences and observations translated into visual form. I am drawn to the wondrous narratives of nature and humanity, as well as the transformative power of color. Through my work, I seek to explore these elements and create a sense of connection and understanding.

I use art as a means of expressing emotions and telling stories. Through my diverse body of work, I explore the complexities of the human experience, with particular attention to the history of women, the struggles, and the resilience. I am especially intrigued by the human body and face as sites of inspiration, identity, and self-expression.

Color plays a central role in my work. I am fascinated by its ability to transform a person or place, altering mood and atmosphere through shifts in intensity and contrast. I strive to engage viewers and encourage them to look more closely, discovering the subtleties and nuances within each work. In many pieces, I incorporate an intensely colored abstract aesthetic to heighten emotion, draw attention, and suggest deeper meanings beyond the immediately recognizable.

My artistic process begins with an idea, observation, or feeling and evolves organically through the act of creating. I believe in experimentation, embracing uncertainty, and taking risks as essential parts of artistic growth. I continually challenge myself to explore new techniques and mediums, allowing my work to grow alongside my thinking. Whether through bold color, expressive mark-making, or my hybrids of painting and drawing, I approach each piece as an opportunity to investigate and create a compelling visual experience.

Bio:

Rooted in a lifelong curiosity and a deep connection to my surroundings, my artistic journey began in New York, where I earned Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Fine Arts, with a concentration in painting and drawing, along with a Ph.D. in Education.

For over thirty years, my work has been exhibited consistently. I have been creating art since childhood and have received numerous awards and accolades throughout my career. My most recent honors include the Visual Artist of the Year Award from the Arts Council of Rockland and the Weir Masterpiece Award from the National Park Service.

My life and career have been dedicated to both the visual arts and arts education. I serve as curator of the Rockefeller Gallery and am the founder of the annual Bluefield Arts Festival. In addition, I am a certified art teacher in both New Jersey and New York, as well as a published writer.
