ARTIST STATEMENT

My artwork is content-driven expression. Over the years, it has ranged from two-dimensional works on paper, sculpture in a variety of mediums, video and performance art, as well as public art projects and installations. I have addressed such themes as environmental blight, mortality, and gender. Being a woman, giving birth, and being a caretaker informs my work with the instinct to understand, accept, nurture, and transform. I look for lyrical and iconic forms and tend towards a minimal aesthetic. I look for insightful humor. Playful integration of ideas is at the heart of all my work. My two Flower Lips series are paper reliefs that incorporate found materials such zippers, buttons, nuts and bolts, staples, fabric, and rope. In both series I cut watercolor paper which I have painted bright lipstick colors. In the (v) series the colors are on the reverse side creating a pink glow on the sculptures' surfaces and on the wall on which they are hung. I attach the paper with mechanical methods. Most are sewn together, others are riveted or bolted, while others are stapled. The works reference flowers, women's lips, genitals, and female energy. Flower Lips (v) celebrate intimate female energy. Flower Lips (m) explore the internal and external conditions that nurture women's expression. Each one is a "snapshot" of a creative way to speak out and be heard.
