SUNNY CHAPMAN

SUNNY CHAPMAN

Based in New York City and Delaware County, NY

B. 1950

ARTIST STATEMENT:

I’m obsessed with shape and color, as evident in my current body of work, Shapeshifters. These pieces are crafted from plywood, that is typically cut into biomorphic shapes, and then collaged and painted in bright colors. The style is influenced by patterns and decoration of the 1970’s. I’m also working on a larger series in shades of black that is embellished with stones, shells, bones, and fragments of wood collected on nature walks.

My art practice is influenced by Sufism, and Alchemy. The symbols that emerge include doorways as portals, and circles that represent the whirling of the dancing dervishes. Birds signify the link between heaven and earth, bridging the past and the present.
