FRANCINE PERLMAN

MONIQUE ALLAIN

Based in NYC, NY

B. 1945, Bronx, New York

ARTIST STATEMENT:

Francine Perlman has an MFA in sculpture, which explains the spatial depth in her 2D work.  Perlman address’ contemporary challenges that are closest to her heart and mind. As an artist she recognizes that beauty speaks for itself, but requires the work to at least evoke, if it doesn't provoke, to stir emotions for humanity's various conundrums and for the sensory pleasures of rhythms , which, like music and dance, need no explanation.

Bio:

Francine Perlman has been exhibiting sculpture, installations, and works on paper, since 1985.  In April 2023 at Ceres Gallery, her solo show, Listen Closely included both sculpture and printmaking and referenced the critical dialog about Israel/Palestine.  Her installation, Doors Open/Close, 2017 showcased art by women in domestic violence shelters.  Her outdoor sculptures, The Farm Project, in Garrison, NY, were featured in press coverage in both 2014 and 2015.  A collaboration during Covid, which traveled to many venues, was Arc of the Viral Universe, each artist filling a book of 180 pages to that theme.  She has had solo shows at the historic Eldridge Street Synagogue and other non-gallery settings, and her work was included in exhibitions in the Hammond Museum, Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center, the National Jewish Museum, Snug Harbor Cultural Center, the Albright Knox Museum, Ceres Gallery, and Sculptors Alliance at Governor’s Island, as well as several shows in a branch of the New York Public Library.  Her work appeared in the 2004 Bonn Biennial, Bonn, Germany, at the Frauen Museum, and was acquired by the museum.
