Curated by Connie Lee On view March 9, 2024 through May 11, 2024

The three women artists featured in Present in the Modern World, Ingrid Capozzoli Flinn, Alison Causer, and Donnelly Marks share a modern sensibility in their art practices. Their works reference periods in time from Byzantine to the present. They collectively have blurred the lines between traditional, modern, and contemporary. Causer and Capozzoli Flinn’s brush strokes take classic oil paintings into the present and exhibited alongside Marks’ sculptures that reference brutalist structures create an exhibition that is timeless but of the modern world.

The term modern generally refers to the mid 20th century but it is frequently used/misused to describe contemporary art and objects of design. It is within this context that the exhibition places the work of three contemporary artists in dialogue, opening a conversation about the art movements that have informed them and influenced all our preferences in artistic styles.

Ingrid Capozzoli Flinn paints the female form, primarily working in oil interpreting the nude figure with light, contrast, and subtle color, exploring how the feminine body fills the space they occupy. Each model’s pose is real and empowering.

Flinn was born in Detroit Michigan, she lives and works in Harlem New York City. She received bachelor’s degrees from Wayne State University and the University of Michigan and holds a Master of Fine Arts in Painting from Boston University. Her work has been exhibited across the US and at Figure Works in Brooklyn, NY and the Painting Center in New York City, NY.

Alison Causer is investigating the deep connection between female wisdom and the natural world. Her series Ladies of the Land depicts women with strength and awareness. Her Caves series is an invitation to enter a sacred place.

Causer holds a BFA, The Columbus College of Art and Design and an MFA, New York Studio School. She has exhibited in the US and France, and has been awarded the Ruth Katzman Scholarship, The Art Students League of New York, and the Jane C. Carroll Scholarship, New York Studio School.

Donnelly Marks is a visual artist, photographer, and sculptor. Her practice uniquely shifts between mediums.  Marks sculptures are assemblages crafted with raw often brut materials discovered in her daily life.  Her photographs are of ordinary things that are barely recognizable when constructed and stylized in her still life images. Her process starts with a spontaneous connection to the material. The sculptures are initially built quickly but then evolve through an ongoing exploration of the structure over time – one idea intuitively leading to another.

Marks earned a BFA in sculpture and photography from Carnegie Mellon. Her practice is based in Long Island City, Queens, where she has a studio in the “The Wills Building”’ a factory building in the heart of industrial Queens. Marks exhibits frequently throughout New York City.
