Based in NYC, Long Island, Florence Italy
B. 1956 Freeport, New York
ARTIST STATEMENT:
Painting is a conversation between the subject and artist Nancy Sandler Bass. Whether working with still life, figure, or landscape, my aim is to capture the essence of the moment—a sense of time and place that can be experienced beyond the surface.
I explore the relationship between representation and abstraction through layers of materials color, texture, and form to push the boundaries of the two-dimensional surface. Bass invites the viewer to connect with the work and their own memories, to create a shared human experience, one that exists beyond words.
Bio:
Nancy Sandler Bass grew up on Long Island and spent her early years painting the landscapes of the North and South Forks. She graduated from Stony Brook University, where she studied painting—under the guidance of art critic Lawrence Alloway, Moses Soyer, Francis Cunningham, Daniel Schwartz, and Dan Gheno During those years of study she had the opportunity to interview Alice Neel and Rosemary Mayer, and to meet Philip Pearlstein and Alex Katz among other well-known figures in the New York City art world.
As a single mother, she continued to paint while working as a print and accessory designer—work that continues to influence her artistic practice today.
